Go Afghan!

I was just watching the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show and the first dog in the hound group was an Afghan Hound from Rome, GA. Apparently there's a breeder of top Afghan Hounds in Rome and Ch. Elan Sebring The Matrix won best of breed at the biggest dog show in the US. The Afghan didn't win the hound group. Still cool to think that I once lived in the same town as a champion show dog.

I guess that's the best you can do when you live in the 'Hurst. Or you just have some strange obsession with champion dogs. That wouldn't surprise me. You're kinda strange.

Erm ... wow ... you're simply happy with being born in the same town as a champion dog. You don't need much to make you happy do you?

I don't know what to think about dog shows. I'm sure for the most part, these dogs are treated great. But when do they just get to be dogs?

Dog shows are stupid.

Sid, I actually wasn't born there, I just met most of my readers in college and working there from '98-2006. It's kind of a small town and you don't usually see that area mentioned on national events. That and I was logged in and at the computer when I saw the dog's hometown flashed across the screen.

Meaghan, I don't think being a dog requires the same sort of freedom that being a person does. Most dogs are happy if they're pleasing their owners and really enjoy the grooming and attention they receive. The dogs that don't enjoy that environment just don't show. They spend most of their lives and pampered pets and a few weeks of the year traveling and showing. It's not like dog racing in Florida where they shoot the losers and abuse most of the rest. These dogs have it made and most of the owners are more into humane treatment of animals than you are.

Mickey, you're stupid. Unless, of course you're implying that dog shows promote the status of pure bred dogs as being higher than that of the local shelter mutt, in which case you are right. I've got a soft spot for watching a couple of the televised shows a year, though. Easy watching, I love seeing the rarer breeds, and rooting for the hounds and herding dogs for best of show (they always lose to crappy shih tzu or pekinese foot stool). But you didn't say any of that.
