Who Are All These Old People?

I'm live blogging from the STP concert tonight. The opening band is on, and, while not bad, they aren't keeping my interest. Bands always seem cooler in dark claustrophobic venues, kind of like that time Julie invited Hank and me to go see her cousin play with their band Tuna Mint in some basement bar in Atlanta. I could be wrong on several of those facts. I had already been drinking when she called us up and continued at the bar until the music and booze created that sort of nearly hallucinogenic trance that proves to be quite pleasant. It was really quite transcendental, but not great for longterm memory formation.

That being said, the Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre is a nice venue. It's kind of like Chastain in that it makes a large outdoor venue seem relatively intimate. Of course the outlying clouds of Tropical Storm Fay are painting the skies above us a milky gray and the occasional mist falls, but we're under the covered section. Sadly we're under the very edge so when the wind shifts we sometimes feel it.

Going back to the premise here, there are a freaking lot of old people here. Were the glory days of the nineties really that long ago? Are the people who were just out of college when I was 16 and rocking out to STP in my truck as I raced down narrow country roads really the graybeards I'm seeing here? How old am I exactly? I won't be thirty for another two years. I haven't even decided what I want to do when I grow up and here I am in a crowd full of old people waiting for a band I don't even think of as old yet.

Next thing I know I'll be hearing E tell me he knocked up some girl and I'll be wondering where the hell my life went.

Damn.

10 High at the Dark Horse Tavern. It's not my favorite venue but it's a stable here in Atlanta.

The cousin is in Key West this very weekend playing with the new (comprised of some old members) band - a red hot chili peppers cover band. Let me know if you're interested... they have a lot of shows coming up.

I had the same thought when we went to see Dinosaur Jr. here a few months ago. "There are a lot of old people here! ... Wait, I AM one of these old people." Sad.
